Why are Formula 1 Races so Boring to Watch?

Uzone.id – For the last 3 years Formula 1 has been dominated by Max Verstappen and Red Bull with Verstappen winning 2 consecutive world titles, then breaking records.

This situation raises the question: Is this domination of F1 boring, or is this truly an amazing new era?

Verstappen is getting bored, and many F1 fans are bored with his dominance. Racing, they say, becomes predictable because Verstappen almost always arrives at the finishing line first at every Formula 1 race on the circuit calendar.

Both the lack of competition at the top — Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s teammate, was unable to offer any meaningful resistance — and the pole contribution also played into things.

A lack of Safety Cars and DNFs (Did Not Finish) in the past few seasons also adds to F1 feeling bored. That way the races run smoothly but it also takes away the surprise and drama of the Formula 1 racing 2020 season and below.

However, some of you would have us believe that we are living in an amazing new era in F1 — with Verstappen and Red Bull at the sharp end. (They respect Verstappen as a great driver of all time, and can only look at the Red Bulls performance there as an incredible example of what can be achieved with a team and technology.)

We can also think of this as an opportunity for other teams to learn and grow. If, by example, other teams can see how Red Bull does it, they can copy the strategies and approaches that work at Red Bull.

Is Verstappen-Red Bull dominance making F1 boring or a new era of wonder, depending on one’s point of view? For some, this is a boring and predictable era. For others, it’s a chance to witness one of history’s greatest racers and incredible technological advances.

Verstappen is now fifth all-time in race wins, and seventh all-time on the podium.

Mercedes driver, Lewis Hamilton stated that it is not the drivers who are to blame if Formula 1 racing is boring, but the competition rule makers who must be responsible.

“If you say boring, I understand that,” said the five-time world champion after celebrating his sixth win of the season as quoted by Reuters.

“Don’t blame the drivers because we weren’t the ones who wrote the rules,” he said

“You have to put pressure on the people at the top, who are supposed to fix this. I think they are trying, but over the years they have made bad decisions.”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff also commented. “It’s a different perspective when you’re watching in front of the television and when you’re sitting where I am,” Wolff said.

“What would you do if you were in our position? You would continue to tirelessly push for performance. That’s what we do in all areas, but I think the fans also see a race that is not pleasant to watch.”

Meanwhile, former Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel responded to the many critics who called Formula 1 racing boring. The four-time F1 world champion said that, although many people criticize this, the fact is that racers enjoy the land jet sport.

Vettel questioned the attitude of people who brand F1 as a boring sport. According to him, there is absolutely nothing wrong with F1 racing.

“We enjoy the race and the course of this competition, but who knows what will be seen on television. Whether that makes the race look more entertaining or not, obviously we are all comfortable. If it looks boring, then why?” said Vettel, quoted from Crash.

Vettel understands that many parties may want the F1 race to be filled with lots of overtaking action. However, Vettel emphasized that F1 racing is not easy.

Attempts to overtake your opponent must be made very carefully. Because of that caution, sometimes racers need time.

The racer must be completely relaxed when driving his car. So, not infrequently, boring races can occur because many racers are careful not to be too wild in riding their mounts.

“Maybe other races are more entertaining. But here we made everything more controlled to avoid unwanted things,” said Vettel.

F1 racing is considered to be getting boring because the competitive season is very monotonous. As a result, in recent years, the popularity of F1 is said to have decreased drastically.

The number of countries that are no longer interested in holding F1 is claimed to be proof of this. Malaysia is the first country to officially end the contract to hold F1 races which were previously regularly held at the Sepang Circuit. After Malaysia, now Singapore and China are also reportedly starting to consider the same option.

The number of viewers continues to decline is said to be the cause. F1 was considered to be getting boring so the audience abandoned it. This is because the land jet competition in recent years has always been dominated by one team. The adrenaline rush typical of racing is also considered to be reduced because overtaking actions are rarely seen.
